We now found a tree that was cut down and sectioned, indicating that these markings are, or were used for marking down trees for cutting. At least, that is the main assumption we have, correct?"
He paused, thinking. "The coordinates pointed us here, which is another proof of humanoid activity. If this was a place actively used by a colony, the colony itself should be somewhere nearby. Perhaps there is a trail nearby? Big trails like that can stay visible for decades, even after people stop using them - because they are kept being used by animals. We just need to find it, assuming it's somewhere closeby. Should we check the clearing again?"
